The Monument Behind Your Stone: One Shaft, Two Building Eras
The Story In The Stone
Construction began in 1848, stopped near 152 feet in 1854, and resumed under federal engineers before the shaft was completed in 18841,4.
The visible change in the marble records that interruption: different quarry beds and decades of unequal weathering made the building eras legible on the exterior6,7,8.
Masonry levels, construction campaigns, and marble sources follow National Park Service and Library of Congress records. Individual stone width and position are reconstructed from the documented taper and are not an as-built record. A registration is commemorative and conveys no ownership of the monument.
