The Story In The Concrete
Hoover Dam was built as a series of large vertical concrete columns, each placed in successive lifts of about five feet, from June 1933 until the last concrete was poured in May 1935.
A network of cooling coils carried river water through the mass so the concrete could cure in years rather than the century-plus it would otherwise have taken — an engineering system documented by the Bureau of Reclamation.
Registry blocks are commemorative map divisions derived from Hoover Dam's documented column-and-lift construction system and visible downstream face; they are not historical Bureau of Reclamation block numbers or an as-built record. A registration is commemorative and conveys no ownership of the dam.
