The Story In The Steel
Eero Saarinen's weighted catenary rises 630 feet above the Mississippi riverfront, built from 142 stainless-steel structural sections raised leg by leg until the crown was set in October 1965.
Each leg is an equilateral triangle, 54 feet on a side at the base, narrowing steadily toward the crown, so no two sections of the Arch are alike.
Structural section counts, leg geometry, and construction dates follow National Park Service and Library of Congress records. Individual section boundaries are reconstructed from the documented weighted-catenary profile and are not an as-built record. A registration is commemorative and conveys no ownership of the Arch.
